I've said this many times before, and I might be wrong, but today must have
been the windiest day we've had since I've been here.....
Similar to yesterday, went out first just before midday, then had a long
lunch, then went out again afterwards.
1st session: all good! Mucho stacked on my 4.6, but the great little sail
did the job brilliantly again, and I was never overpowered or out of
control with it. What really saved my bacon today was being able to go out
on a 2001 JP Wave 78L, that wasn't being used today by the client who'd
reserved it since he had gone on a buggy tour for the day. If I'd had to
use the Axxis I don't think I would have been able to sail all day since it
would have been far too big and uncontrollable. But the wave board was just
right for the conditions and mucho mucho fun.
Like yesterday, the first 45 minutes were the best part of the day. Was
sailing really well; just about planed out of a gybe on the inside, was
making gybes on the outside dry (but still very wobbly) with reasonable
consistency, and was inches away from pulling off a couple of nice body
drags....very very nearly got back on the board after getting the feeling
of my legs properly skimming along the water for a bit. Basically was
really going for it and loving the mental windy conditions. Shame the waves
were small/non-existent since the board I was on felt like it was well up
for a bit of hot and steamy wave-riding action.
After that started to get a bit tired and sailing performance deteriorated
slightly as a result. Came in for a long lunch, then went out again around
3.30pm. Couldn't believe it, but it was now even windier.....!!!! Although
the good old 4.6 still behaved impeccably and I still didn't feel too
overpowered on it, the conditions had now turned it into more like survival
sailing, and manouvers became very difficult, especially on the outside.
Had only been out for about 15 minutes when whilst trying to get into the
straps on my way in, I bore away a fraction too much and a gust hoicked me
over the front with mucho força and speed. Somehow landed on one of the
battens of my sail, with my lip+nose taking the brunt of the impact. (With
hindsight, almost a good thing I did land on the batten, even if it was
more painful, since if I had landed on one of the panels in the sail I
would probably have gone straight through it, and ruined my sail). Also my
leg took a whack on the mast. Took that as a sign it was game over for
today, so came in straight away. End result: a bloody nose and a sore leg,
but nothing serious, and fingers crossed I'll be fit to sail tomorrow on my
last day here (sob sob sob.....).
